Physical-chemical characteristics and fatty acids composition in dairy goat milk in response to roughage diet BABT
Torii,Marcelo Shizuo; Damasceno,Júlio César; Ribeiro,Luciano da Rocha; Sakaguti,Eduardo Shiguero; Santos,Geraldo Tadeu dos; Matsushita,Makoto; Fukumoto,Nelson Massaru.
The objective of the present work was to evaluate the physical-chemical characteristics (density, pH, acidity, fat, protein, lactose and total of solids contents) and milk fatty acids composition (C: 4 to C: 20) in response to roughage sources (alfalfa hay T1; oat hay T2 and maize silage T3). Nine Saanen lactating goats were used, in a triple Youden square design (3 animals x 2 periods). There was no treatment effects in the physical-chemical variables in the univariate analyses; by multivariate analyses three distinct patterns of fatty acids could be defined: milk with greater quantity of short chain fatty acids and acids C17:1omega7 e C18:2omega6 (T1); milk with equivalent amounts of short, medium and long chain fatty acids (T2); and milk with greater...

Importance of standardizing raw milk quality for the enhancement of Croatian market competitiveness AgEcon
Tolusic, Zoltan; Mijic, P.; Tolusic, M..
In the European Union member states (EU), it is necessary to evaluate hygienic condition of milk in order to determine milk price. Similar requirement was set by the Republic of Croatia in 2000. The Rulebook defines minimal quality criteria that fresh raw milk must have in order to be purchased. Upon completion of analysis, milk is classified into quality classes, each having a defined price. Increased value of somatic cell count (SCC) (higher than 400.000/ml) and MO (higher than 100.000/ml) directly decreases the raw milk price, while higher content of fat and protein causes its increase. Since the system of market milk price formation was established, producers have been stimulated to produce milk of higher quality: in a total of milk being purchased,...

Casein fractions of ultra high temperature milk with different somatic cell counts PAB
Fernandes,Andrezza Maria; Bovo,Fernanda; Moretti,Thais Santos; Rosim,Roice Eliana; Lima,César Gonçalves de; Oliveira,Carlos Augusto Fernandes de.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of somatic cell counts (SCC) in casein fractions of ultra high temperature (UHT) milk. Raw milks were categorized in SCC groups of low (200,000-320,000 cells mL-1), intermediate (380,000-560,000 cells mL-1) and high cells (600,000-800,000 cells mL-1). Five replicates of UHT milks within each SCC category were analyzed for casein fractions after 8, 30, 60, 90 and 120 days of storage through high performance liquid chromatography. SCC showed effect only on beta-casein reduction. SCC in raw milk increases the proteolysis of UHT milk, as a consequence of beta-casein degradation.

Quality control of Dutch custard balanced against recall costs AgEcon
Velthuis, Annet G.J.; Reij, M.W.; van Wagenberg, Coen P.A..
The relation between the moment at which a recall of Dutch custard is initiated and the direct costs of this recall was investigated. A simulation model of the custard supply chain was developed to compare scenarios with and without a quarantine of 48 h at the storage of the production plant. The model consists of three parts; first the distribution of a 24,000 L batch of custard over the supply chain over time is simulated, second the time to detect spoilage bacteria with a recontamination test procedure is simulated, third the direct recall costs of custard over the different parts of the supply chain are calculated. Direct recall costs increase from about €25,000 per batch to €36,171 from 57 to 135 h in the situation without quarantine and from €25,000...

Replacement of corn silage with cassava foliage silage in the diet of lactating dairy cows: milk composition and economic evaluation BABT
Santos,Geraldo Tadeu dos; Modesto,Elisa Cristina; Souza,Nilson Evelázio de; Ítavo,Luís Carlos Vinhas; Jobim,Clóves Cabreira; Kazama,Daniele Cristina da Silva; Valloto,Altair Antônio; Massuda,Ely Mitie.
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of corn silage (CS) replacement by cassava's foliage silage (CFS) on the production and quality of milk. Twelve lactating dairy cows were used in a randomized block experimental design with four treatments and three repetitions per block. CS was replaced by CFS at the levels of 0, 20, 40, and 60%. The replacement of CS by different levels of CFS had very low effect on the variables studied. Milk density decreased when the replacement level was increased. Fatty acids 4:0 and 6:0 presented a quadratic behavior, while fat acids 8:0, 10:0, and 15:0 presented a linear behavior as their concentrations fell when CFS diet content was increased. The CS replacement by 20% until 60% CFS resulted a significant decrease in the...

Convenient genotyping of nine bovine K-casein variants Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Pacheco Contreras,Víctor I; Lourenco Jaramillo,Diana L; Parra Bracamonte,Gaspar M; Martínez González,Juan C; Sifuentes Rincón,Ana M.
K-casein gene polymorphisms are of major importance in the dairy industry due to their association with different quality and productive traits (i.e., milk protein). Several methods for genotyping this gene have been proposed; however, none are focused on the simultaneous discrimination of nine K-casein variants. A strategy based on PCR-RFLP was designed to characterize nine K-casein variants (A, B, C, E, F², G, H, I and J) and used to genotype three cattle populations: Gyrholando (3/8 Gyr x 5/8 Holstein), Charolais and Carora. The B variant was the most frequent in the Charolais and Carora breeds, with allelic frequencies of 0.60 and 0.59, respectively. In the Gyrholando breed, four variants were found, with the A variant being the most frequent and E and...

Economic viability of feeding dairy cows on diets containing different levels of soybean oil R. Bras. Zootec.
Lopes,Marcos Aurélio; Lage,Luciana Andrade; Lopes,Fernando César Ferraz; Ribeiro,Carlos Gustavo Santos; Gama,Marco Antônio Sundfeld da; Rodriguez,Norberto Mario.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the economic viability of feeding dairy cows with diets containing different levels of soybean oil. Cows were fed diets based on tropical forage (Pennisetum purpureum Schum) supplemented with different levels of soybean oil (0.0, 1.5, 3.0, and 4.5% of diet DM). The calculations were made considering the prices of the dietary ingredients and the daily consumption of each dietary treatment. The milk quality-based payment was estimated on the bonus paid for milk fat and protein contents according to two systems used by companies of the dairy sector. The economic benefit was calculated as the difference between the income obtained from milk sale and the cost associated with animal feeding. The MOP scenario analysis...

Performance of dairy goats fed diets with dry yeast from sugar cane as protein source R. Bras. Zootec.
Lima,Luciano Soares de; Alcalde,Claudete Regina; Freitas,Hanna Sakamoto; Molina,Bruna Susan de Labio; Macedo,Francisco de Assis Fonseca de; Horst,José Augusto.
The effects of inactive dry yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) from sugar cane were studied in 18 primiparus Saanen dairy goats (51.07±1.43) on dry matter intake and digestibility, milk production and quality. Animals were distributed in a completely randomized design during 90 days (from day 60 of milking). Diets were composed of soybean meal; soybean meal + dry yeast; or dry yeast, as protein sources, and ground corn, mineral supplement and corn silage (40%). Animals fed the dry yeast diet showed lower intake of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein, ether extract and neutral detergent fiber. Diets did not influence milk yield; however the milk production efficiency (kg of milk produced/kg of crude protein ingested) was better in goats fed...

Association of TLR4 polymorphisms with subclinical mastitis in Brazilian holsteins BJM
Mesquita,Adriano Queiroz de; Rezende,Cintia Silva Minafra e; Mesquita,Albenones José de; Jardim,Eurione Antonio Garcia da Veiga; Kipnis,Ana Paula Junqueira.
The identification of dairy cows with greater or lower potential to develop mastits has been pursued for many years among different segments of the milk industry, including governmental organizations. Genomic studies have suggested that Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) within the pattern recognition receptors (PRR) could lead to different responses to pathogens, and consequently result in mastitis resistance or susceptibility. To investigate whether toll like receptor 4 (TLR4) gene is associated with subclinical mastitis in Holstein cows from a property in the state of Goiás, Brazil, TaqMan allelic discrimination and somatic cell count were performed. One hundred and fifty milk samples were analyzed for SCC and centesimal composition. Twenty percent...

Feeding strategies to design the fatty acid profile of sheep milk and cheese R. Bras. Zootec.
Nudda,Anna; Battacone,Gianni; Boaventura Neto,Oscar; Cannas,Antonello; Francesconi,Ana Helena Dias; Atzori,Alberto Stanislao; Pulina,Giuseppe.
The majority of sheep milk produced in the world is transformed into cheese. Feeding is a major factor affecting the quality of sheep milk and, therefore, of sheep cheese. Because fat is the main compound of cheese, this review gives an update on the effects of feeding and nutrition on milk fat content and deeply discusses feeding strategies aimed at increasing the levels of healthy fatty acids (FA), such as conjugated linoleic acid and omega-3 FA, in milk and cheese in the human diet. In addition, the use of alternative feed resources such as by-products, aromatic plants, and phenolic compounds in the sheep diet and their effects on milk and cheese FA composition are also discussed. Among feeding strategies, grazing and the use of supplements rich in oils...
